Azim Premji among India's top philanthropists with $21 billion total pledge

Azim Premji, chairman of Wipro Ltd, on Wednesday earmarked 34 percent of his shares worth Rs 52,750 crore to an endowment under the Azim Premji Foundation. Donations by Premji, which included Wipro's shares, as well as other assets owned by him and, has made him one of the biggest philanthropists in the world.

Others on the list include UIDAI chairman Nandan Nilekani, HCL Tech's chair Shiv Nadar and Biocon's chief Kiran Mazumdar Shaw.

After the latest decision, the total value of the philanthropic endowment corpus contributed by him stands at Rs 1.45 lakh crore ($21 billion), which includes 67 percent of economic ownership of Wipro Limited, the foundation said. The Azim Premji Foundation works in the field of education directly. It also supports other not-for-profits working in some specific areas through multi-year financial grants. His net worth is at $21.8 billion.
