It has been a landmark day in India's fight against COVID-19, the virus which has claimed over 1.5 lakh lives across the country in less than a year. Four days ahead of the coronavirus vaccine rollout, dosage from both Serum Institute in Pune and Bharat Biotech in Hyderabad are being shipped to multiple destinations.
About 3 crore healthcare and frontline workers will be the first ones to receive these vaccine, beginning the 16th of January.
Serum Institute's Adar Poonawala has reiterated that the company will supply the first 100 million dosage of Covishield to the government for 200 per dose. However, he added that after that, the company intends to sell Covishield in the private market for Rs 1,000 per dose. He also expects people with no co-morbidities to receive the vaccine in two months.
The health ministry has confirmed that people will not have the option of choosing between Covaxin and Covishield. The government also said that the entire process of vaccination will last more than a year.
